Who writes this site
I spent two years as a home improvement solutions coordinator, helping homeowners work out what a project actually involved and connecting them with the right contractor for it. Flooring, roofing, painting, landscaping, energy-efficiency work — my job was to translate between what a homeowner wanted and what a trade could quote.
The same question came up constantly: how much material does this need, and is this quote reasonable? Most people were not trying to become experts. They just wanted one number they could trust before picking up the phone.
After that I spent two years supporting real estate agents and mortgage brokers in San Jose, coordinating documents, listings and communication between buyers, sellers, lenders and contractors. Since 2023 I have worked for myself as a blogger, SEO specialist and WordPress developer, researching and writing content about homeownership, home improvement and real estate, and building the sites that host it.
Pavetally is where those two halves meet. Most asphalt calculators online hand you a number with no explanation — no density assumption, no formula, no way to check whether it makes sense. Every calculator here shows the exact formula it uses and the density behind it, and lets you change that density if your supplier quotes something different. If a number on this site cannot be traced back to a published source or a clearly stated assumption, it does not get published.
What I am not is a paving contractor or an engineer, and this site never pretends otherwise. The formulas here come from published industry sources, named on the page. For anything beyond a straightforward residential driveway, a contractor standing on your actual site will beat any calculator — including mine.

- Not a lead broker in disguise. Where a page links to a contractor quote form, it says so plainly.
Editorial standards
- Every number has a receipt. A figure on this site either links to a published source or states the assumption it rests on.
- Every page is edited by a person before it publishes. Nothing goes up as unreviewed machine output.
- Calculators and tables share one source of truth. The tables inside the guides are generated from the same formulas the calculators run, so they cannot disagree.
- Updates are dated. Every guide carries a "last updated" line, and prices get re-checked as sources publish new figures.
